The Badaling section is not only the best preserved but also the most impressive and representative section of the Great Wall. It is located roughly 70 kilometers northwest from the center of Beijing. It is a defensive outpost of the Great Wall occupying a commanding strategic position. The wall was made wide enough for five or six horses to be ridden abreast on its top. In peacetime, the Wall has proved useful as a highway, transporting people and supplies over large distances. Because of its magnificence and beauty of its scenery, Badaling gained the worldwide reputation by being enlisted in the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1988.
